山青水秀的青桫镇，镇上的居民共同生活在一条老街上，进出青桫镇唯一的交通工具就是绿皮小火车。廖家父子因为卖老屋一事大吵一场，儿子廖波带着快临盆的媳妇上了小火车，林家母女因母亲林慕言忙于工作疏于照顾女儿方林，且私自改了方林的高考志愿，导致方林怨恨母亲多年不曾回家过年，林慕言决定卖掉老屋。小火车列车长刘定堂与村里老人廖奶奶、医生林慕言商量，决定重新恢复镇上传统流水席，召集外出打工的村民回家，借以把大家重新凝聚在一起。大年三十，外出打工的村民都上了小火车，因天气恶劣导致塌方，火车前后受阻，而廖波媳妇春艳受惊早产，火车因刹车失灵下滑。在难关面前，刘定堂刘天明父子站出来指挥，两代人从最初的怨怼、矛盾、排斥，后来彼此认同、理解，齐心合力，共度难关。最后安全回到青桫镇吃了团圆饭，彼此心结也纷纷化解.
